The North Dakota Mothers Committee was formally organized on February 6, 1958 in Bismarck, North Dakota, but had annually recognized a Mother of the Year in the state since 1945.  The founding members of the North Dakota Mothers Committee were: Mrs. H.A. Belcher (Fessenden), Mrs. A.E. Handy (Washburn), Mrs. Dave Robinson (Coleharbor), Mrs. E.J. Conrad (Bismarck).  They believed the ideal American Mother should exemplify the precepts of the Golden Rule, have a sense of responsibility in civic affairs and be active in public service. The new organization hoped to engage mothers from every community in the state to participate in their efforts.

The North Dakota State Chapter is working towards becoming a full blown association of American Mothers. As a group, the North Dakota Chapter has met several times in Fargo to work on various volunteer opportunities, including: baking holiday treats at the Ronald McDonald House, packing food for Feed My Starving Children, setting up and attending Purses for a Purpose to raise funds for human trafficking survivors in North Dakota, and recently, they made cards of encouragement for children at the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch.
