The first Mother of the Year representing the District of Columbia, Mary McLeod Bethune, was introduced to America by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1949.  Mary served in President Franklin Roosevelt’s administration and was a close friend of Eleanor's. She was the first of a long list of accomplished mothers to receive this prestigious honor, which includes; Phyllis Brown Marriott (1974 National Mother of the Year, Honorary President of American Mothers,Inc., and Founder of the American Mothers Endowment); The Honorable Corrine (Lindy) Boggs (1994 National Mother of the Year, 9 term US Congresswoman and Ambassador to the Vatican); Barbara Harrison (NBC4 News Anchorwoman for 30 years and Founder of “Wednesday’s Child” National Adoption Initiative), Maxine B. Baker (President, Freddie Mac Foundation); and Virginia E. Hayes Williams ("Top 50 Women Entrepreneurs" and mother of Mayor Anthony Williams). The District of Columbia Mothers Association focuses their annual service efforts on events that support Innocents at Risk and Breast Cancer Awareness.
