The first Maryland Mother of the Year was named in 1948, Mrs. Cecil Ward Smith, of Cumberland. Since that time, Maryland has recognized many mothers from across the state with this honor.

The Maryland Association of American Mothers was formally re-organized in 2016. They have monthly meetings by phone and meet twice a year in person. Their statewide service project is called “Leading Within – Home, Hope, and Honor (Leading Within HHH),” which is a program for youth aimed at providing information to build strong and healthy relationships between young people, adults, and seniors throughout Maryland. Members of the Maryland Association enjoy connecting youth to members and area professionals to empower them to lead successful projects and activities within their home, school and community. The Maryland Association has also implemented two outreach initiatives, "Mother Me Time" (Member Chair: Dr. Hattie Washington), and "Meet Our Maryland Association Guest" (Member Chair: Dr. Renee Starlynn).

Connect with the Maryland Association on their Facebook page for education and membership opportunities, community activities and updates, information about nominating a Mother of the Year and American Mothers national highlights.
